The Air Conditioner Replacement Process – What to Expect
If you are reading this, you have probably already determined that you need an air conditioner replacement. If you are not certain that your AC actually needs replacing, check out this helpful article "How to know when you need to replace air conditioner." If it is time to replace your air conditioner, the following will give you a good idea about what to expect.
Meet with Your HVAC Technician to Determine The Correct Size of HVAC System You Need
Your HVAC technician should come to your home to do an initial assessment to determine the correct size of air conditioner you require. The technician will measure the square footage of your home and do some load calculations taking into consideration the climate in your area and the size of your property
They will also take a look at the condition of your home with respect to its ability to contain conditioned air. For example, are there drafty areas, or is it well insulated? This will help the technician to recommend the proper size of HVAC system you need.

Determine the Type of Air Conditioner You Want
There is a wide range of air conditioners on the market. The type, size, and energy efficiency of the model will affect the cost. It is important though to remember that the cheapest model may not be the best value for your money.
A more efficient, energy-saving one could actually save you more money on energy bills over time and may be well worth the extra initial investment. An air conditioner with a higher SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio) will be more energy efficient and cost more than one with a lower SEER rating.
Your technician should then give you a written estimate of the cost of the new air conditioner and the installation. For an idea about how much you should expect to pay for a new air conditioner, check out our article "How Much Does It Cost to Replace an Air Conditioner."

Prepare Your Home Before the Installation
What You Can Do: It is a good idea to move any valuable items you have, such as antiques, safely out of the way before the installation takes place. This can speed up the process so that you won't have to do it once your technician arrives. In addition, if you have pets, you will also want to move them to a safe and secure location out of the way from where the work will be taking place. Loud and unusual noises may be frightening for them.
What the Installer Will Do: Your installers will lay down drop cloths and/or paper to protect your flooring. They will also move any other furnishings out of the way. If there are heavy items that cannot be moved, you may want them to be covered with plastic to keep off any dust that may collect during the installation.
Remove Your Old Unit and Install Your New One
The technician will turn off the power to your old unit and then drain any refrigerant from it before actually taking it apart. Once the old unit is removed, your new one will be installed. Depending on the scope of the project, duct-work may need to be repaired or replaced as well. If duct-work is involved, then the project may take longer.

Testing Your New HVAC System
Once your new air conditioner replacement is complete, the technician will perform pressure and vacuum tests to make sure that it is working properly before new refrigerant is added. Once the testing is complete, your technician should show you how to operate your new unit. At this time, you can ask any questions that you might have.
The following video will give you an overview of what is involved in replacing an air conditioning unit. However, the process takes skill and training so we highly recommend that you hire a professional to do it for you.

He answered all my questions promptly and honestly. I verified his reviews after we first met, and found my initial experience to be exactly as others had described. His quote was far better than any others we had received, and it wasn't long before we had him lined up for the job.
