What is Jardiance?

Jardiance (generic name Empagliflozin) is a diabetes medication that is used along with diet and exercise to help keep blood sugar levels under control. If you have type 2 diabetes and a history of heart disease, then Jardiance can lower your risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack.

How does Jardiance work?

Jardiance works inside your kidneys to remove sugar from your body. Your kidneys most important job is to filter blood. Jardiance helps your kidneys to pee out any extra sugar.

What is Jardiance used for?

Jardiance is used by adults with type 2 diabetes to lower blood sugar in combination with exercise and diet. It's also used by adults with type 2 diabetes and heart disease to help prevent heart attacks, strokes, and sudden death.

What are the side effects of Jardiance?

Common Jardiance side effects include:

  • Genital yeast infection (vaginal infection in women and penis infection in men)

    • It can cause redness, odor, pain, swelling, itching or discharge from the vagina or penis
  • Urinary tract infection (UTI)

If you have a UTI, you may experience any of the following symptoms:

    • Feeling burning or pain when you pee
    • Feeling like you can't control your pee; needing to pee more urgently or frequently
    • Pain in your pelvis (lower part of your stomach)
    • Fever or backache
    • Nausea (feeling sick to your stomach)
    • Throwing up

Call your doctor right away if you think you may have a UTI. A possible Jardiance side effect is a very serious UTI that requires going to the hospital, so it's best to let your doctor know immediately if you start having any symptoms

Rare, but serious Jardiance side effects include:

  • Low blood pressure or dehydration

    • You can feel lightheaded, dizzy, or faint, especially if you try to stand up too fast. This is more likely to happen if you're older (over age 65), take blood pressure medicine, have kidney problems, or eat a low salt diet.
  • Increased ketones in blood and urine (ketoacidosis)

    • You may feel sick to your stomach, or throw up. Some people feel tired, have stomach pain, or have trouble breathing. This can happen even if your blood sugar is less than 250mg/dL, so be sure to check for ketones in your urine if you have any of these symptoms.
  • Kidney problems

    • A possible Jardiance side effect is that it may harm your kidneys. Be sure to have routine blood tests before and while using Jardiance to make sure your kidneys stay healthy. Call your doctor right away if you suddenly start to eat or drink less (for example, if you get sick), or if you start losing fluid (through diarrhea, vomiting, or blood loss) because this can make it more likely for Jardiance to hurt your kidneys.
  • Low blood sugar

    • This can leave you feeling sweaty, shaky, tired, weak, hungry, confused and irritable, feeling like your heart is racing, or give you a headache. Be sure to talk to your doctor before starting Jardiance to check your risk for developing low blood sugar (especially if you take Jardiance with other diabetes medicine). Understand how to bring your sugar back up safely, as directed by your doctor.
  • A severe genital infection around the anus

    • Jardiance may harm the tissue under the skin around the anus, and cause redness, swelling and pain in your genital area
  • Allergic reaction (rash, hives, swelling of face and tongue, trouble breathing)
  • Increases in cholesterol and fat in your blood. Sometimes Jardiance can make your cholesterol levels go up, so your doctor will monitor your blood tests regularly.

What should you know before taking Jardiance?

Jardiance should only be used by people with type 2 diabetes who are over age 18. It is not for people with type 1 diabetes. It should not be used if you have diabetic ketoacidosis (a condition where there is too much acid in your blood). Diabetic ketoacidosis happens when your blood sugar is too high for a prolonged period of time. It happens when there are extra ketones in your blood or urine.

Jardiance is not for use in people with severe kidney problems or dialysis.

Do not use Jardiance if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Jardiance is not for people with severe kidney problems, or those on dialysis. Tell your doctor if you have kidney, pancreas or liver problems before taking Jardiance. Do not drink alcohol while using Jardiance. Tell your doctor if you're changing your diet or starting to eat less before using Jardiance. If you're planning to have surgery, tell your doctor before starting Jardiance. Do not use Jardiance if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in Jardiance.

Before starting Jardiance, talk to your doctor if you have any of the following:

  • a history of trouble with peeing (urination) or urinary tract infections (UTI)
  • are currently eating a low-salt diet
  • using or planning to use any other prescription or over-the-counter medicines, including vitamins or water pills (diuretics)
